Creme Color Change: Newborn – 4 Weeks

Since we officially have our first litter of Creme d’Argent babies, we will be following the color change of the Creme rabbits, just as we have done with our Champagnes! The process will be similar, but I’m looking forward to seeing it happen with our little orange cuties.

Sire of Litter: Adonis
Dam of Litter: Cream Cake

Before we get into how the babies have looked thus far in their first month of life, I wanted to take a moment to mention their mother, Cream Cake. Unfortunately when the kits were young Cream Cake had to be culled due to severe teeth issues and other birth injuries. She was a great mother to them while she was here and gave them her all even though she herself was trying to heal. The babies were fostered to Hart and have grown up with some Champagne adoptive siblings. Even though Cream Cake’s untimely death was very upsetting, I am grateful to Hart for taking 2 more babies under her wing and raising them up as well as she has her own.

Newborns

Cream Cake’s litter after kindling. Four kits were born, but unfortunately only 2 have made it to 4 weeks old. The kit blurred in the photo had facial injuries from a rough birth (and was one that sadly didn’t make it).

Creme d’Argent babies are born pink: similar to other light colors of rabbit (white especially), but very different from the black babies of the Champagne d’Argent. It was very exciting to have cute little pink wigglers in the rabbitry!

The first few weeks

The Creme kits in the nest with their new Champagne siblings.

When the kits are about a week old, they begin to grow in their orange hair! They haven’t yet opened their eyes, and look so sweet and fuzzy at this age. You can really see the difference between the Creme and Champagne coloring in the above photo too!

Once the kits had their eyes open and could begin exploring around their mom’s cage, they are just precious little orange fuzz balls! I can’t tell if it’s an actual difference in their fur or face, or if it’s just harder to see on the black Champagnes, but I feel like their little faces just look so fluffy! You can see the white belly that’s signature for the the Cremes already as well.

Four weeks old

The kits have made it through their first month, and here’s how they’re looking!

They will be with their mom two more weeks. When they reach 6 weeks of age they will be tattooed, weighed, sexed, and weaned. We will give you another update then!
